Miles Mills Jug Edgefield Pottery South Carolina
Item sold
Great example of a Miles Mill jug from Edgefield South Carolina. It has the characteristic flat rim. It has a brown alkaline glazed body with a kiln kiss on one side. Circa 1870. Miles' Mills was named for Lewis Miles. In the book Great and Noble Jar there is a story about how Miles' Mills got its name. Apparently Lewis Miles ordered some freight that was to be delivered by rail to him at Miles' Mills. Since there was no such place at the time the freight train wanted to go on up the rail line and deliver the goods at Graniteville. Lewis Miles wouldn't have this and he stopped the train at Miles' Mills and padlocked it to the tracks until he could get on the train and get his goods. The jug is in good condition. It does have a kiln kiss on one side. 11 inches tall.
