North Georgia Pottery Old Craven Jar
Item sold
Very Nice example of an early North Georgia small preserve jar. It has great glaze runs. Circa 1870. Attributed to Isaac Henry Craven (1839-1905). Isaac made pottery in Mossy Creek all his life. The first Cravens came to Mossy Creek from Randolph County after the Cherokee Indian Cessations in 1818 and 1819. The Cravens were reportedly in the second of the first two wagon trains down from North Carolina into the Nacoochee Valley in 1822. John and Isaac Craven soon after opened the first pottery on the Northern branch of Mossy Creek (just South of Cleveland Ga). Isaac was John's son. This Old Small Jar has fantastic runs. It is attributed the Isaac Henry Craven circa 1870. 9 1/4 inches tall. It has two fine hairlines that intersect across the base. Also has a small chip under the lip. It would make a great addition to your Georgia pottery collection.
