at Mud Sweat and Tears Southern Antique and Folk Pottery

There are many books from which you can learn about Southern pottery. Since alkaline glazing began in Edgefield South Carolina if you get only one book I would highly recommend Great & Noble Jar: Traditional Stoneware of South Carolina. For further interest in the old South Carolina and Edgefield pottery a good book about Dave's work is I Made This Jar: The Life and Works of the Enslaved African-American Potter, Dave.

For Georgia collectors a good book to start with is Brothers in Clay: The Story of Georgia Folk Pottery. It talks about White County, Crawford County, and Washington County, just to name a few.

For North Carolina collectors see Turners & Burners: The Folk Potters of North Carolina. This book talks about Catawba Valley stoneware, Piedmont area stoneware, and Western (Buncombe County) North Carolina stoneware.

A very good though somewhat short book on Alabama pottery is Pottery From the Mountains of Alabama by Joey Brackner and Ron Countryman. It has good information on Dekalb County, Sand Mountain Pottery as well as other areas in the state. As far as I know it is out of print but you may be able to find a used copy on ebay.

There is a good book by James R. Cormany called The Pottery of Stockton, South Georgia's Only Jugtown. It is sort of a home-published book with a limited edition of 100 copies. It has very good information and pictures on Lanier County pottery in South Georgia. Lanier County is not covered in the Brothers in Clay book. Timmerman and Foreman came from this area and both shops produced some great looking stoneware. The Lanier County Historical Society bought the rights to this book and will probably officially publish it in the future.

Joey Brackner has just published a very good book on Alabama folk pottery called Alabama Folk Pottery.

Some of these books are available at Amazon below.
